The 'Shiatsu for Pregnancy' treatment provides much needed rest and relaxation to the expectant mother. Shiatsu works to harmonize the body's energy, to alleviate common pregnancy conditions. Some conditions that may be helped by Shiatsu for Pregnancy include:

  • Increases circulation
  • Reducing leg cramps
  • Helps alleviate sciatica
  • Promotes digestion
  • Eases heart burn
  • Promotes deep relaxation
  • Helps to increase energy levels
  • Provides gentle support for the expectant mother

The treatment uses a special cushion that adapts to the figure of a pregnant woman, allowing for a comfortable position. There is room for your bump, so you can comfortably lie face down, and enjoy some back shiatsu, otherwise, a comfortable side position is used.

Studies have shown that acupressure during labour can contribute to a more positive experience for the mother. For example, one study found that women whose partners had completed an acupressure massage workshop had a higher rate of spontaneous vaginal delivery and lower rate of caesarean section, and they averaged a much shorter length of labour. The project also found that women largely felt that acupressure delayed their need for other analgesia and that it was positively helpful in labour, and both women and birth partners felt much higher levels of birth satisfaction. "I used the acubirth techniques during my labour and it was absolutely fantastic! My husband and I had gone to a workshop with Terri Fitzpatrick to learn the acupressure techniques a couple of months before I was due. We really got a lot out of the class. It was very simple and very do-able. On the day I gave birth, my labour started at 6am and the contractions came every five minutes from the start, so I didn't have much time to build up to it. After the first couple of contractions I panicked a little, but then my husband suggested trying the acupressure. OMG! Any discomfort subsided within seconds of my husband applying the pressure to the various points on my back. We carried on with me having the contractions every five minutes for over ten hours. I decided I wasn't moving from our bathroom! I found it all very manageable and breathed my way through the day with my husband applying the pressure on the various points that Terri had taught us. I had always said that I didn't want to go to the hospital too early in case they sent me home again, but at 6pm I decided it was time to get going as the time between contractions had reduced to about 2.5 minutes. I had no idea how I was progressing in terms of dilation as it was my first baby. Joy oh joy, when I arrived in the hospital and after being examined, the midwife told me that I was 10cm dilated. I had not needed any pain relief whatsoever - all we had used was the acupressure all day. It turned out that my baby was OP, so I had a back labour, but everything was fine and I was able to give birth to all 8lb 4oz of her myself.

Roisin, from Drogheda, has two children and says their births couldn't have been more different.

"For the first birth I was in labour for more than 12 hours and had expected to have an epidural, but then when it came to my time the anaesthetist was called away. The second time I was seven days overdue and I found shiatsu absolutely fantastic for easing the discomfort. It was so relaxing and soothing when my partner pressed the points, that I could almost go back to sleep.

Then, when in the hospital he was actively involved and could see on the monitor when contractions were starting and would press. In the end, I went from three centimetes dilated to delivery in 35 minutes. I'd highly recommend it."

"Myself and my husband attended Terri's Acubirth Workshop prior to our second birth. We both found it extremely helpful, and Terri to be both professional and very caring. Terri fully explained all of the different acupressure points which we could use in the run up to the birth and during the birth itself. We got pleanty of time to practice the points in the class and again at home. Terri wasn't just teaching text-book, she actually had two labours herself, using the points, and is very passionate about natural birth, if at all possible. We had a very difficult first birth and I was nervous that our second birth might end up similarly. In labour, we used what Terri had taught, at different stages. I cannot convey how fantastic some of the points were, one in particular eliminated half or most of the contraction pain! The course is worth doing for this alone.

I have been raving about it since and telling all my friends and other pregnant women. Compared to my first birth, I had a very short, trouble free natural birth and as a result I didn't tense when contractions occurred, since the acupressure eliminated the pain. I now have a very healthy baby born 9lbs 2ozs, and I would certainly recommend Terri's acubirth class."
